Title:Brave and Bruised
Disclaimer:I own nothing.
A/N:for the 'at the close' comment ficathon
Summery:Lavenders 7th year teaches her many things. When Harry returns to Hogwarts, these things become clear, and she is ready to fight. The time for being pretty is over.
The overwhelming sense of hope and relief she feels when Harry Potter steps into the Room of Requirement nearly bowls Lavender over. Swiftly on the tails of the hope she feels, is the guilt that sets in for ever having doubted this man about what was happening to their world and her breath comes in sharp gasps. Like many others she moves towards him, reaches out, smiles, and feels tears prick the back of her eyes, catching Ron Weasley’s eye and giving him a nod. It is good to see him, good to see all of them standing in front of her in one piece. One of the worst things had been the unknown. Not knowing left them with no hope and nothing to comfort themselves with when they were tortured by their teachers or worse and then forced to torture the younger students they tried desperately to protect. All they had was their own belief that was chipped at more and more with every day that passed.
And yet Harry was standing in front of her.
She listens carefully as Harry tells of his plans and the crowd of students try to work out what he could be looking for that is connected to Ravenclaw house. Lavender focuses more on their thin faces, the smear of dirt on Hermione’s face and Ron’s torn sleeve. It seems so long ago now that they were young, innocent, and just starting out at Hogwarts with nothing to worry about. Now they have a war to fight. Staring at Hermione’s limp un-kept hair, Lavender thinks of her own. Pulled up into a messy ponytail, she looks very different from the Lavender that the trio must remember but they have all changed in one way or another. They have had to. In her sixth year she wouldn’t have dared leave the Tower without a full face of make-up, perfect hair, and her clothes pristine. Now, things are very different. The time for being pretty is over. There is no pride in looking good anymore but instead it comes from managing to heal a punished pupil’s injuries and stopping their pain, preventing a scar, or by getting fellow classmates into the safety of the Room of Requirement before the Carrows found them and their punishment was too severe to recover from. Students look as good as they need to in order to avoid punishment but nothing more. No amount of make-up could hide the purple bruises across the young women’s faces anyway and detention after detention means none of them have the energy for glamour charms.
The Death Eaters will come, there is no doubt about that, and a feeling of nervous excitement spreads throughout the room. The time to take a stand has come. Lavender listens as instructions are handed out, and silently pulls her scrunchie from her hair to re-tie it as tight as she can; making sure all of her hair is out of her face and can’t get in her way. Ron and Hermione appear tense as they start making their way towards the door towards Harry and that only confirms Lavender’s suspicion that they know a fight is coming. The last fight. Lavender isn’t known for being serious but that has changed too because too many had disappeared from the school and this life isn’t one she can live. She’s still a Gryffindor, sorted there for a reason, and she would rather die fighting for what is right than bend to what is wrong.
It is time to end things. It is time to fight.
Title:Dwelling on Dreams
Pairing:Lily Evans/Severus Snape
Disclaimer:I own nothing.
A/N:'it does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live' was the prompt
Summery:In his dying moments, Severus reflects on the life he wasted and the things he might have changed.
it does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live
The words circle around his mind as he allows the boy to take the memories that he needs from him. Words Albus said to him far too many times, the man who had trusted him enough to take his life, the man who gave Severus a second chance. It suddenly feels as if he didn’t use it as well as he should have and that now it is like life must not let him pass to death without giving him one last reminder of his failings. He had dreamt of a life that would never happen for so long that he has failed to live the life that was granted to him and not her. It is the perhaps the greatest disservice to her memory he thinks, as he gasps and twitches on the floor in front of her son whose eyes bring back too many memories, handing him crushing pain mixed with a comfort he can’t help but latch on to as he feels death tighten its hold on him.
Memories Potter needs to see, in order to understand, and perhaps Severus hopes to forgive pass through his mind as he releases them. They hurt and are tinged with the bitter regret of everything he would have done differently even from his childhood. Even the simplest possibilities of perhaps being friendlier and more understanding with Petunia Evans might have changed so much. Maybe if he had just told Lily how he really felt about her. It isn’t the big things that he thinks over as he feels his lungs struggle to take in oxygen, not the way he turned to the Dark Arts or how he fell into Voldemort’s clutches and did horrible things, but the little things that might have ended up making things so different.
Albus also said that death was but the next great adventure but it offers Severus nothing as his heart finally gives in. He had never been the adventuring sort yet found himself part of one bigger than he could ever have predicted, all for him to travel so far in experience, and yet finds that in the end he hasn’t reached any sort of destination.
Pairing:Draco Malfoy/Astoria Greengrass
Disclaimer:I own nothing
A/N:for scarletladyy, because her liking this pairing gave me the nudge to try writing it.
Summery:Draco doesn't understand why it is the younger sister his father wants him to marry at first. Then he realises that Astoria is innocent, she hasn't seen the things he has, and how she might hold the key to him reaching peace.
She was innocent and young, hadn’t experienced the worst of the war being young enough to avoid fighting but old enough and smart enough to avoid punishment, and Draco thinks that might be part of what attracts him to her. When his father suggests him as a woman to court, young as she is, Draco raises an eyebrow and questions why it is the younger sister his father suggests in place of his old classmate but it becomes obvious on their first meeting. Astoria laughs like she doesn’t have a care in the world where Daphne’s blue orbs still reflect the shadows of a war that Draco is desperate to escape.
Astoria is truth and hope that things can move forward, can be rebuilt, and that maybe there is a place of him in the world he nearly destroyed in his own selfish yet desperate need to save his parents. Everything that Draco believed in has gone or betrayed him. There is no glory in bowing to another and no true thanks for the acts he was forced to commit. Everything he once believed as truth is tainted and he doesn’t know what he should believe in any more. He’s always been told what he should do and who he should be by his father but even he now stands confused and bewildered by the new world they find themselves in.
Astoria is a happy young woman, fresh out of Hogwarts, with cheeks that blush when Draco pays her a compliment and eyes that twinkle when he makes a suggestive comment. He thinks he might just manage this life. A life that will see him live comfortably, without the suspicion of others over who he takes as his wife with her being a Ravenclaw, and an escape from the weight of expectation from high pureblood society. A wife will answer so many questions but Astoria will be more than that. She might just be a person that Draco can find happiness with. As much as he had put on a facade for the Malfoy name, Draco was simple in many ways. He loved to fly, to make Potions, and to read books he found interesting. He looked to expand the Malfoy business empire, or scrape it back from the brink as the case may now be, and to have a family that wasn’t afraid to laugh in public. He longed for a son that would call him ‘daddy’ and not father and who he could sit in his lap and read stories to.
Draco’s world was so complex and filled with half truths and riddles passed from father to son with no one knowing the answer. A life that was as simple as taking Astoria out for a meal, promising to take care of her, and having someone to share his life with is as much as he can hope for and though he doesn’t always believe he deserves it, a life he can live while feeling safe in his own home. The only truth he knows is Astoria, the truth that hope exists, and there might be a future for him after all.
