When he is, she knows that she should treat him as her own but she just can't. Petunia's thoughts on that fateful day on the first of November.
The baby is quiet and well behaved but if anything that merely unnerves Petunia more. His green eyes are too bright as she had rocked him to sleep with distain, too much of an accusation, and even though she knows she has to keep him Petunia desperately wants to get rid of him. It had taking a lot to convince Vernon and even when he gave in she still wasn’t sure. A traitorous voice in her head tells her that if the situations were somehow reversed Lily would treat Dudley as her own but Petunia just can’t.
The vulgar scar on his forehead is a constant reminder of his strangeness and Petunia convinces herself that the only way to cure it is to make him work hard and earn his keep. He won’t be lazy, he won’t reply on that magic, because he won’t need it. If she has to keep him, she will fix him. Harry doesn’t cry and he doesn’t wail and that is not normal. Dudley cries all the time. It only shows that he is already strange. It has to be stamped out of him.
The cupboard had been empty and quiet and the boy had clearly needed to sleep so Petunia had bundled up the blanket he came in and put him inside with the door open as she sat in the living room and thought things over. At first, she had not meant anything by it. Dudley would have kept him awake and she didn’t want a cranky child to deal with as she thought things over. Now though, it seems easier to leave him there, shut him away and not have him intrude on her life. The cupboard is clean, he will have air, and she won’t have to empty out the third bedroom and deprive Dudley of the playroom they were designing. Petunia didn’t ask for this.
Making up her mind, she gets unsteadily to her feet and walks slowly into the hall, staring at the sleeping baby for a few silent seconds before closing the door and locking it shut.
